Smart Cars Bootcamp: high-school students build self-driving cars with AI

From 7 to 9 July LIACC @ UFP — the LIACC pole at Universidade Fernando Pessoa — hosted the “Smart Cars Bootcamp: Artificial Intelligence in Action”, a summer internship that is part of Ciência Viva’s national programme Ocupação Científica dos Jovens nas Férias.
It was an intensive, hands-on internship in which students from the 9th to the 12th grade explored artificial intelligence and robotics. Guided by lecturers and students of UFP’s informatics student group, they worked with robotic kits equipped with technology similar to that of today’s autonomous vehicles.
Using Python and sensors such as cameras and LiDAR, the participants collected data in real time and trained simplified AI models to implement several examples of autonomous driving.
